Hello.

Welcome to the Squirmy Wormy blog! As a children's book author, I try and fill my life with creative projects and outlets for my family. From art projects to kids activities to easy recipes, I want to share them with you and your family!

Colorful Coffee Filter Snowflakes

Colorful Coffee Filter Snowflakes

You’d never think to use coffee filters for arts and crafts, but you’ll be surprised when you try these colorful snowflakes! The coffee filters provide a strong, water-absorbent surface so they are tough enough to handle a lot of water saturation and rough coloring from your kids.

We had previously done an art project with coffee filters using watercolors, but this time we tried out colored markers and water - and they worked great too! So give either a try, there is no right or wrong way to create beautiful decorations for your home.

MATERIALS

  • Coffee filters
  • Colored markers (or watercolors)
  • Paint brushes
  • Water
  • Scissors
  • String

DIRECTIONS

1. Draw on the coffee filters with the colored markers. You can draw circles, spirals or any shapes you want to fill in with your colors.

2. Let your little ones paint with water on the filters and watch the colors bleed together! Once they are completely wet, set aside to dry.

TIP: I have the kids paint on baking sheets to keep all the color from getting on the table and to minimize the mess. And once finished, I placed the wet coffee filters on paper plates to dry.

3. Let dry all the way before cutting out the snowflakes.

4. Fold the coffee filters in half. Then fold again in quarters. Then you can fold again another one or two times before you start to cut your snowflake designs.

5. Cut circles, hearts, lines into the folded coffee filter. I also like to cut the edge so it is angular or scalloped and looks finished.

6. Open up and see your creation!

7. String them up and hang by the window to see the colors shine through.
